When I first saw we were getting a Heavy Wave Grenade Launcher, I was pretty underwhelmed by the news. Not upset, not disappointed, but just... underwhelmed. On paper, the very idea seemed counterintuitive; Wave Grenade Launchers are fantastic crowd-clearing weapons, but they're just that, crowd-clearing, which is something you generally don't spend Heavy ammo on unless it's for a Machine Gun or sometimes a Sword. "So why use this thing?", I thought to myself when Lightfall came out, and I kept getting underwhelming perk combos in my inventory, like Stats for All + Thresh or Shot Swap + Turnabout. One day, however, I finally got one with Vorpal Weapon just by chance, and amused by the idea of pelting a boss to death with Stasis Waves, I finally gave it a try, and... it all made sense, finally.

The only reason all the other reviews you see here - up to and including the *top-voted one* - are from initial impressions and that's it, because anyone who's truly used this weapon can tell you they're wrong. Dimensional Hypotrochoid is a great weapon, and at that, a versatile one too. I throw around "versatile" a lot, but with this thing, I really do mean that - as long as what you're shooting at is actually on (or close enough to) the ground so the waves can hit them, this gun can do basically anything, it's staggering. Clear trash mobs? Though you should conserve ammo, absolutely. Do single-target DPS? Shockingly, yes. Kill players? They have to be grounded to kill them in one shot, but it does that too.

There are three important things about Dimensional Hypotrochoid's functionality that are only evident once you use it, and are important to know. One, while its waves are narrower than Special Wave Launchers, it's by a much smaller degree than you'd think; two, while grenades still only explode on contact with the ground, they create an actual (small) explosion around them on initial impact; and three, befitting of a Heavy weapon, its waves deal unexpectedly high damage per. Even with point one in mind, you should go for one with high Blast Radius (Volatile Launch + High-Velocity Rounds gives you the most at +15, MW for +10 more optional), just to be safe. Point two is a double-edged sword - on one hand, it actually lets this weapon one-shot-kill enemy players if you hit them direct with the grenade as it explodes on the ground, but on the other hand, it's why shooting this weapon too close to yourself kills you, as opposed to Special Wave Launchers, which are very safe to use point-blank. Point three is a big part of why this weapon is more viable at boss DPS than you'd expect; "direct" grenade hits give you extra damage, sure, but just hits with the waves alone are deceptively strong before any damage buffs. Nanotech Tracers rewards successive hits with a little extra damage, Vorpal Weapon and Boss Spec push this even further, and Stasis Weapons Boost is, naturally, highly recommended. One last thing to note is that this weapon does have an unfortunate disadvantage in its lower-than-average total ammo capacity, at 16 rounds to most Grenade Launchers' 20-ish. Something that helps with Heavy ammo generation - Heavy Ammo Finder, the Aeon arms - will be a massive boon with this weapon. Stasis Reserves unfortunately doesn't help though, given how little ammo it gives you per copy (+1, I think).

While it's good everywhere (except maybe most Crucible modes - just use a high Blast Radius Adaptive or Rapid-Fire GL there), this weapon is best at home in Gambit, being the activity where basically every facet of the game is rolled into one activity. Need to kill adds or blockers quickly? Dimensional Hypotrochoid. Close to a pesky Invader and don't mind using a Heavy shot or three on them? Dimensional Hypotrochoid. It's time for Primeval damage and you've still got time on your Armor Charge for full damage? Dimensional Hypotrochoid. Nobody else on your team's invading and you're confident you can get close enough to shoot them with this weapon? Dimensional Hypotrochoid! The fact that you're given guaranteed Heavy ammo as the round goes on in this mode helps a lot.

For perks? I can't recommend Vorpal Weapon in the fourth column enough - yes, I know Chain Reaction seems tempting, but it does a lot less than you'd think on a weapon like this, trust me. For the third column though, you're a lot freer - Field Prep is obviously just the best choice for the increased ammo and reload speed, and this being craftable, you can get its enhanced version too, but Envious Assassin can be good for boss damage as long as you can time its activation, while Threat Detector and Unrelenting are better for crowd-clearing, if you want to go that direction.

Season 23 post buff to this archetype, let me tell you it slaps. The self damage has been reduced, like any GL or Rocket just don’t aim at your feet. The increased wave size is felt, making it an add clear machine even without chain reaction, and the bonus damage is just the cherry on top. I highly recommend busting this out for the Phalanx Echo encounter. Envious and Vorpal are my easy picks for this.

Do you want to kill yourself? Do you want to waste heavy not doing DPS? Do you want to barely hit any enemy because the wave is too compressed? If so, then by all means use this clunker.

Very good GL for Playlist strikes or gambit, the perk combos you can get are S tier few being envious assassin and chain reaction, stat for all one for all, unrelating chain. Me personally I would spec into reload for any waveform gl this included I believe blast radius doesn't do anything so no need for that and velocity you don't really need because you won't try to map major across the map and the other MW are pretty useless so reload makes the most sense. Soild 4/5 for a wave form gl. In pvp you would more than like have a hard time hitting people if they are smart, but it could punish the un aware players and you could get some dirty multi kills since I would assume this heavy gl would one shot any resilience guardian out of super and in super hopefully in super with vorpal, but I would say it gets out classed by other family of GL in pvp since they Also one shot but have blast radius stat that matters so they are more forgiving to use I'd say 3/5 pvp

why does this stasis GL not have single stasis perk? this thing wouldn't be so bad if the perk pool wasn't so slim I swear if this thing could get chill clip it'd be way better.

Writing this review post Final Shape. By no means a "must have" pick, it's definitely decent at its job of clearing rooms of enemies with little to no effort. This is largely in part due to the heavy wave frame buffs a few months ago. Especially with the rise of Still Hunt/Celestial Hunter being as powerful of a combination as it currently is, if you're not designating your heavy to a rocket swap mid damage rotation this thing could prove to be useful.

The perks do leave something to be desired, as really the only decent perks in the third column are envious and possibly unrelenting.

Fourth column doesn't get much better, as chain reaction, while good for clearing rooms really isn't a must have given how absurdly large the wave from this thing already is. Personally, I'd recommend Vorpal just for that little damage boost.

One very interesting thing about this weapon however is its interaction with the origin trait, Nanotech Tracer Rockets. With most Neomuna weapons, Quicksilver Storm included, you have to shoot multiple instances to spawn a tracer rocket. Dimensional Hypotrochoid, however can fire off tracer rockets with just one shot, assuming the wave hits three or four enemies. The tracer rocket is by no means a game changer, only doing about 10,000 damage on a red bar, while the wave for comparison's sake does about 60,000 in -5 content, but it is a nice addition and easily one of if not my favourite origin traits in the whole game that were mostly wasted on the lacklustre Neomuna weapons.

In PvE, do give this thing another shot if you've already dismissed it when it first came out.

In PvP, do not bother with this thing. The wave does approximately 176 damage, which is nowhere near enough to one shot a full health guardian.

"What is this junk from, that old moon base? What do you mean, 'just refurbish it'?!" -Exodus Indigo Quartermaster
Seems like a convo a dev would have with a publisher when making "new" content.

I digress. I don't think I'll be using this.
The roll I have is Unrelenting/Chain-Reaction.

Does it clear ADS? Yes.
Though with it being a Heavy Wave-frame, you'll find yourself needing distance with the ads, lest you deal damage to yourself shooting the ground up close.

Is this a smart choice to have for AD clearing? Not when other wave-frame special weapons can do the job just as well and with a better ammo economy.

If you don't want DPS or you're dealing DPS elsewhere (via Super or something), then this could be a fun detour. But I can't shake the feeling that I'm gimping my self for the novelty of this being the first wave-frame heavy GL. I was testing this via Legendary Lightfall campaign.

One way this could be different from special wave-frame GLs is maybe change how the waves behave. Perhaps have a thicker wave on the floor. Right now it feels like it doesn't cover much ground.

This doesn't seem like a smart choice for PVP either when the counter is just jumping over it.

TL;DR Lots of room for AD clearing potential but not a game-changer. Waves should be thicker/bigger than normal special GL's to stand apart. Better off using something else.

Very much agree on it being too similar to special wave frames. It's enjoyable to use but the extra wave distance doesn't feel nearly as impactful as the extra blast radius that further differentiates standard special and heavy GL's.

Melts Riven but is worthless everywhere else. There is no reason to use this instead of a regular special waveframe like forbearance. Definitely worth picking up for LW speedruns though.

A teammate brought this to Vesper's Host contest mode and did massive damage to the 2nd boss without even using his super. Grab yourself a Stats For All/Envious Assassin + Vorpal and try it out.

Wave frames made their big splash all the way back in Season of the Dawn with Martyr's Retribution. While most have been mediocre when coming out, Forbearance took wave frames by the throat and became the new standard for special add clear with Explosive Personality, Harsh Language, and New Pacific Epitaph following right behind it. Dimensional Hypotrochoid was shaping up to be the next big thing, Heavy GLs were getting buffed, it's the first heavy wave frame, and it's from the newest expansion, so it has to be good, right?

Nope.

Only slightly more damage than special damage wave frames, no stasis-exclusive perks, and extremely tough to get a pattern for thanks to Bungie's intentionally poor design, and you have a recipe for garbage stew.

For PvP, don't bother. If you're running a heavy GL, you're gonna run something with good blast radius and proximity grenades so you can consistently pick up kills.

For PvE, I wouldn't bother if you have literally any of the previously mentioned wave frames, but if you HAD to use this, Envious Assassin makes it sorta hands-off for loading it passively and chain reaction is decent considering it's not meant for boss damage at all. You're better off with a Stasis Machine gun if you have a Stasis Singe and need something for add clear, and if you need single target stasis damage Cold Comfort exists.

Don't touch it with a 10 foot pole unless you're a completionist or bored.

So at first, I thought this thing was absolute garbage in *every* possible way, then i remembered the Riven cheese. Enhanced Field Prep Vorpal was what I crafted, and it *obliterates* Riven. Not worth your time and resources IMO, but if you happen to get a vorpal roll, you will be pleasantly surprised when pulling the provolone method. Without Riven cheddar it's PvE score would be a fat zero, as for PVP, while there are some goofy plays to be made with a heavy ammo waveframe in PVP, honestly just bring any other heavy gl in and immediately outperform it.

I know this thing had it's up and downs but it's really great for Onslaught, I went for Filed Prep and Chain Reaction which was amazing. another roll I crafted was Filed Prep and 1 for All, easy to proc because it's a wave frame and bosses melt with this thing.
also Envious Assassins and Vorpal works as a secondary boss dps option.

This is a weird gun and it isn't great for a lot of things, but it is one of the best weapon for clearing large hoards of really beefy enemies. Sure, Forbearance is prolly better because of it being special ammo, but this thing has the benefit of a 5-7 round mag which allows it to cover a much larger area and deal much much more damage to multiple targets in the process. I first realized it's utility when I did the last terminal overload encounter where the elite Wyverns show up and omfg, it just shredded them. You can't get that type of wide angle damage output with anything else. Some wave-frames will come close, but nothing quite compares to this thing. If you have a means of dealing good single target dps, like SES, Synthos, or general ability spam then I'd say this is a good pick. Otherwise, you should stick with a Regnant or a Wendigo.

The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is it's ammo-pool/economy which leaves a something to be desired. Craftable field-pred / chain-reaction helps, but it's still pretty lack luster considering what it's meant to do.

Overall I would say that it's a very solid pick for a decent amount of situations despite it's negatives and it's really really fun to use, so think twice before you delete a god-roll.

Outclassed by pretty much anything in the heavy slot. I'm sure someone out their is using this to assist with ad clears in some higher end content or something, but I can't find a use for it. For PVP its a heavy GL that doesn't one hit with a direct hit, trash.

The first ever Heavy ammo Wave Frame Grenade Launcher. It's Stasis, and it rolls with Chain Reaction. So Forebearance, but slightly worse because its in the Heavy Slot.
Still, a slightly worse Forebearance is STILL really good, so grab Chain Reaction, pair it with Envious Assassin for overflowed magazines or Stats for All for an easy reload bump, and you're good to go.

Don't know what this things damage is like in PvP. Is it still a one shot kill? Probably. Stick Threat Detector/Genesis and Vorpal/Turnabout on and you're probably good to go.

Not sure why this GL gets so much hate. It's a niche weapon type for a specific purpose. If you want a normal GL, use literally any other GL. But unlike the others, this can instantly drop Hydras regardless of their shields, in addition to the benefits of being stasis, and having a large mag and not needing to be reloaded after every shot. So if you're running a raid/lost sector/GM/etc, with situations that call for it, it does things no other weapon can do.
