The D.F.A. is a stepping stone gun. It's a stop on your journey to the perfect, best-est, most god roll-est hand cannons in the game, and "While it's hard not to admire the artistry" ("It's really not", - Ghost, 2017), it seems that D.F.A. will always be outclassed in PvE. Even in year 1, D.F.A. was strictly worse than the raid's Midnight Coup, with Rampage as the main highlight between the two (MC getting Outlaw, and D.F.A. getting Drop Mag or Accurized). That trend continues today, with D.F.A statistically worse than Fatebringer (Timelost), which makes it a solid stepping stone gun toward something better.

Strictly comparing kinetic 140s, the only current competition for D.F.A. is Fatebringer (FB), as it's the only other 140 HC that can take adept mods and get those delicious extra MW stats. When MW'ed, the only thing D.F.A. has over FB is greater Airborne Effectiveness and better Reload Speed (by 1 point!). Statistically, it is inferior, plain and simple. Even comparing to the craftable Austringer, at base, the D.F.A. is better by just a skosh, in range, handling, and aim assist. Statistically, it is upper middle of the hand cannon pack, but not the best.

D.F.A. doesn't have much going for it in perks, either. While capable of rolling the classic Outlaw + Rampage, even this damage combo is *strictly* worse than FB's Explosive Payload + Kill Clip. FB gets the extra mile in having Explosive Payload in the left column, a perk which adds roughly 10.3% extra damage to every (precision) hit. In the right column, FB has damage perks like Kill Clip (+33%), Frenzy (+20%), and even Adrenaline Junky (up to +33%). To add fuel to the FB fire, EVERY SINGLE Timelost FB has Explosive Payload + Firefly curated in columns 3 & 4. Looking back at D.F.A., there are 4 damage options, Vorpal (+20% against yellow bars and above), Rampage (up to +33%), Focused Fury (+20% when landing crits), and lastly Timed Payload (+10.9%). D.F.A. gets no additional damage perk in its left column, so even in best case scenario (Outlaw + Rampage) is still worse than FB with Explosive + Kill Clip (10% + 33%).

Despite all of those negatives, D.F.A. does have a few things going for it. All D.F.A.'s roll with Vanguard Foundry perks, which is a tidy 7 HP back per kill (or recovery on champion stun). While nothing can really beat the ease of use of FB's Frenzy as a damage perk, Rampage, Focused Fury, Vorpal, and Timed Payload are super easy damage perks to keep active, compared to FB's Kill Clip without a reload perk, which a few points in D.F.A.'s favor, though not getting double perks in its column 4 stings a bit. And, as others have mentioned, Timed Payload is great against champions

Finally, and I will happily admit my bias from having 5000+ kills on my sunset D.F.A., the D.F.A. feels bloody great. The recoil, while theoretically worse than FB, is exceptionally consistent, and the gun feel is FIRE. The gun bounce *feels* snappier than FB, and D.F.A. feels easier to track my crosshair as it resettles after shots, which let's me place my follow-up headshots more accurately nearly every time (though the stat package means those bullets, despite their placement, don't always magically go where they 'should'). It rises and settles smoothly, which makes it feel better than FB. Even the sound design packs more punch than FB or Palindrome (did you know those two share the same sound?), with greater oomph to each bullet. There are no weird lights on the barrel (looking at you, FB) that distract your eye from the crosshair, and its shape on the screen when ADS is dark and small - it gets out of the way of its crosshair, which keeps your brain just that "little bit" more focused on your targets.

In PvE, the perks are all 'decent' and up to user choice. Chase those damage perks, and try to pair them with Outlaw, each of them have consistent use cases that are flexible to nearly all content. Something to be aware of, however, is D.F.A.'s anti-synergy between Outlaw and Timed Payload - if a precision shot doesn't kill but the delayed explosion does, you won't get Outlaw. Big sad. For stats, in PvE, anything goes, though pushing Stability helps reduce flinch in harder content. You aren't as strictly bound by the need for range or stability as in PvP. If you're aiming for a Focused Fury roll, try to get an even magazine (Tac Mag or Ext Mag), for that one extra shot with the buff active, and again, Outlaw will be your friend in those situations (though Triple Tap can be helpful for the extra shots to maintain uptime).

Ultimately, this is a gun that will either be replaced immediately by a Timelost FB, or act as a staple in your inventory, and it all comes down to your opinion on the gun feel. It's something that can only be felt, so try a Lost Sector with DFA, then FB to compare and decide.

For that, 4/5 stars in PvE.

It is quite clearly outclassed by its adept hancannon counterparts (Fatebringer for PVE and Palindrome for PVP, namely), however it really is not bad . For instance, a perpetual motion + timed playload roll can come in handy in various activities. It's not gonna be a beast in any specific situation, but it can be your "odd job handcannon" for most activities, in low to high difficulty PVE and casual PVP.

Perpetual Motion + Timed payload makes this is one of the most consistent hand cannons in the game, period. For PVE, can't go wrong with Outlaw + Rampage or Triple Tap + Timed Payload for champions.

Reviews acknowledging that other 140 hand cannons seem like better weapons are not incorrect. Adept Fatebringer is objectively better, aesthetics aside, and Adept Palindrome remains king even if it's unavailable. Austringer is craftable and Eyasluna is an easy farm with small perk pools. All of the previously mentioned weapons are technically more well-rounded weapons with great perk pools.

Adept D.F.A has a very unique roll, though. Fragile Focus adds 20 range to your weapon while you haven't taken damage. 20 range on a 140 amounts to about 2.6 meters of additional range. Fragile Focus pushes the adept D.F.A into the same ranges as the very best 140s. My personal roll is Hammer Forged, Accurized Rounds, Fragile Focus, and Opening Shot with a range masterwork. I use an adept stablility mod to get into the stability sweet spot for weapon performance and my range is still 75/100 before the stat buffs from Fragile Focus or Opening Shot. I'd consider myself a hand cannon aficionado after thousands of hours shooting and hoarding them over the years. My suggested adept D.F.A roll is unique enough to warrant a place in any arsenal.

Tbh, I don't understand why this is getting a low rating in pvp. I have played with two rolls and they have been amazing. This handcannon is spare rations sticky and just feels so good. yes, it doesn't have the cream of the crop stats, but put an adept stat mod on where your stats are lacking, and its comparable to most other 140's. I have a perpetual motion roll with smallbore and accurized that feels so good and a max range roll with 80 range and fragile focus that is a very interesting gun since before I take dmg, this thing has 100 range which is quite insane but also achievable with opening shot. if your like me and don't like rangefinder handcannons, seriously grab one of these beasts.

I'm just wondering what purpose does this weapon serve in a world where, if you really want to use a handcannon, we have access to far superior options in a crafted Austringer and a very easy to obtain Adept Fatebringer.

The stats and perk pool are somewhat mediocre, however there is one thing that sets DFA apart: the airborne stat. Almost every other kinetic hand cannon starts with 10 AE (Austringer is the only exception that I found at 13). DFA gets 18. Slap on Steady Rounds, Icarus mod, and Ophidians and you're looking at a solid 50 AE. This hand cannon is certainly worth a try if you like to take aerial shots.

Eh. It’s fine. I got mine with perpetual motion and rampage and with adept big ones it does the job against reds and yellows in harder content

The biggest thing it has going for it is the recoil pattern, which is a dream. I mean this thing is smooth as butter. Extremely little bounce to where it often feels like a 180rpm.

It’s only sin really is it’s mediocre (to be generous) perk pool. Timed payload and rampage are what you wanna shoot for in the right column. But the left is pretty bleak. I could see some potential with triple tap vorpal if you’re running lucky pants hunter but the long and short of it is this is a perfectly good hand cannon that just gets outdone by others in basically everything. But if you don’t have a time lost fatebringer, this thing gets the job done

While yes, this is outclassed by other 140 hand cannons, this one just has a certain feel, a special feel that I don't feel with any other hand cannons. Out of all the 140s I've used, this one definitely feels the best to use (in my opinion), and it does have some nice combos to boot. You can't really go wrong with outlaw + rampage, and triple tap + timed payload feels great too. Even if you have a timelost fatebringer, eyasluna, austringer, don't skip out on this one. The feel alone makes it worthwhile.

They seriously removed Palindrome for this GARBAGE of a weapon. Why would I want my ttk to be delayed when I can achieve better ttk and flinch with a FATEBRINGER TIMELOST???.

As for PVE Outlaw Wellspring ig is what makes this thing special and the ability to heal you a bit. IDK glad its going away bring back PALI DAMMIT

See my review on the regular D.F.A., except you can slap on Adept mods this time. There’s some niche use, and you can fine-tune the weapon further with stuff like Adept Range, Stability, Big Ones Spec, and so on. But I dunno. Timelost Fatebringer exists, and unless you’re going for perks that this hand cannon offers only, I don’t see the hype behind this one.

hammerforged, accurized, fragile focus and timed payload makes for a deadly combo in pvp. for pve i would definitely go for tac mag, smallbore, outlaw, rampage or prepetual, timed, with a range masterwork of course. i feel as though this weapon does not have enough range or ammo in its mag so for pvp i would for sure go for more ranged options like accurized and hammerforged as well as fragile focus to make up for its base range. you probably wont need more that like 3 bullets to kill someone in pvp unless youre kinda bad at aiming and cant hit your headshots so you might want to get more ammo on it. this HC doesnt really compare to fatebringer or palindrome (which are all really great options in pvp and pve) but at least D.F.A has timed payload which flinches anyone really badly (even with 100 resil) and twice as much as when you have explosive payload and just having regular bullets. honestly just get this until you have a timelost fatebringer or just a regular one that has a godroll because its better at killing stuff and feels good to shoot.

Timed Payload on a 140 is pretty crazy for PvE, especially if we get Overload HC back sometime. Better than Pali for PvE, worse than Pali for PvP (by a lot).
