It's a new season! Popularity ranks can change rapidly at the start of a new season, especially on new weapons.

Be careful jumping to conclusions for a week or so as the meta starts to shake out.

TIP: Popularity Ranks

The letters F thru S below are Popularity Ranks. They measure how popular your roll is versus the most popular roll for this weapon among the global community. The most popular roll is ranked S+. The least popular is ranked F-. Popular doesn't necessarily mean "good"; unpopular doesn't necessarily mean "bad". Use what you enjoy!

When I first saw that Bungie was putting the first strand LFR into Gambit’s loot pool I thought “Oh no, I might have to grind gambit.” I am equally pleased and disappointed to see that is simply not the case. This thing is incredibly mediocre.

There was a time where Clown Cartridge + Vorpal would have been more than enough for this thing to hang, but those days are long since past. Vorpal ate a nerf a long time ago now, and Veist Stinger got nerfed last season along with LFR damage in general. Since it lacks Firing Line, Frenzy, or Bait and Switch, this simply cannot compete with the likes of Cataclysmic or even Taipan. And Clown Cartridge is honestly just worse than Triple Tap, Rewind Rounds, or 4ttC, which are also absent from this perk pool.

So what is there to do if you insist on working with this thing? My best recommendation would be Clown Cartridge + Focused Fury, though there is one potential oddball choice. Golden Tricorn is a 50% buff at x2, and that does blow other damage perks out of the water. The downside of course is it has the worst setup of any option for actually using during a damage phase: get 1 kill on an ad with it and follow up with a melee or grenade kill (on strand mind you which does not have particularly deadly options in either category for the most part) for 10 seconds of impressive damage. This flat out will not work in many dps phases, requires coordination from your team to keep ads up, and is almost certainly still worse than just using an easier option. Just use Taipan.

Actually, Strand is the easiest subclass to proc Tricorn x2 on, you simply need to suspend a single enemy after getting the initial kill. It's still a terrible perk for a linear fusion though, as you need to keep wasting heavy ammo to reproc x1 every 10 seconds.

Man, with this LFR Bungie is REALLY showcasing a trend in that they do NOT want ammo regen perks on these things anymore. Shame.

Laser Painter is Season 21's Gambit weapon, and while I had very high hopes for a good Strand linear that's semi-easy to get, the perk pool leaves a bit to be desired. Since the damage nerf, the main draw of LFRs is their insane ammo economy, offering fantastic total damage with a good amount of reserves. Weapons like Reed's Regret, Cataclysmic and Taipan enforced this with ammo regen perks like FTTC and Triple Tap.

Does Laser Painter have either of those? NOPE.

Being a playlist weapon, this linear has a lot of perks, and to be realistic, most of them are pretty junk. For instance, Unrelenting is not something you want on a linear, and Hatchling, while a good Strand synergy, has no place on this thing because linears are basically never used for add clear. There are some decent perks on this thing though:
Clown Cartridge is nice for bigger mag, Rapid Hit is nice for faster reloads, Auto-Loading is good for swaps. Likewise with fourth column, Vorpal and High Impact are free damage, Focused Fury is a nice boost for crits.

It's so hard to sell this thing because it's missing some way of getting ammo back. It's on par with Briar's and Sailspy in that regard, by being solid but not meta-defining like the three linears mentioned beforehand. If you don't have a good linear and want easy Strand synergy, play a couple Gambit games and get one to drop and see what you get.

Or... you could just craft a Taipan. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This right here? This is my holy grail of this season. I’m an LFR believer ‘till the day I die and while this certainly is no Taipan or Cataclysmic, it’s still the best Strand heavy weapon we have for DPS by a long shot in the current season.

RECOMMENDED ROLL: Fluted Barrel / Enhanced Battery / Rapid Hit or Auto-Loading / Focused Fury / Charge Time MW

Only a handful of good options to pick from and a HUGE perk pool to sift through means you need to know what options make this weapon decent. For starters, column 2: Enhanced Battery if you land on a charge time masterwork, or Accelerated Coils if you don’t. It’s that easy.

For column 3, the moneymakers: Rapid Hit, Auto-Loading Holster, or Clown Cartridge. I’m personally looking for ALH for better synergy with exotic special weapons like Arbalest, Izanagi’s Burden, or Witherhoard.

For column 4, we’re missing the banger options of Bait & Switch or Firing Line, leaving us with: Focused Fury, Vorpal Weapon, High-Impact Reserves, or Golden Tricorn. I pretty much recommend these perks in this order from best to worst, but Golden Tricorn is an interesting option for a whopping 50% damage boost. If you can do the prep work for Golden Tricorn x2 before starting DPS, that’s not just hard to beat; it’s literally impossible to beat! Good luck doing the setup in a pinch though.

PVP… Sheesh. Moving Target + Box Breathing? Historically speaking, perks don’t really influence how good LFRs are in PVP. You either hit your shot or you don’t. If you can hit your shot though, LFRs are still a pretty good option when you get a heavy brick given their high aim assist, but there’s no real reason to prioritize this over any other LFR for PVP, except maybe targeting/unflinching mod synergy.

The only redeeming factor for this gun is if hatch gets buffed and theres some sort of quick swap threadling shenanigans you could do on broodweaver. Other than that, dead in the water unfortunately

Has potential to be good especially if linear nerfs are reversed I'd go with rapid hit mayb auto loading with either vorpal golden tricorn or focused fury for DPS imo for gms I'd like tricorn or demo in 4th column with rapid hit and either reload or range masterwork charge time is imo overhyped bc of reduced damage and for pvp just don't

I've never been less stoked to have a god roll. Idk what else they can nerf to make this weapon worse.

It's a precision LFR without Triple Tap or Fourth Time's The Charm in an era of both nerfed LFRs generally and Veist Stinger specifically. Even with the lack of strand heavies we have this thing is dead on arrival.

Perk pool is pretty poor but I think there is a case to use this. The god roll for me will be enhanced battery, clown cartridge, focused fury. Not a crazy good roll compared to other fusions but this does mean that I can use this on strand warlock to take advantage of the new sanguine alchemy damage boost. This could mean some pretty nasty damage phases when u factor in the focused fury with empowering rift, sanguine damage boost, unravel with the melee and ofc your super which is probably best in game for burst dps. All that damage comes just from you alone. If someone in your fireteam is applying weaken or something like div or tractor you could maybe get even more damage.
Outside of that one instance, I really don't think there's any reason to use this over other linears. Reed's and cataclysmic both do general dps better and besides that rockets tend to be a better move anyways.
