TIP: API Perk Swap
The Bungie API now allows us to swap weapon perks for you*. Click individual perks below to swap them in-game. Click "Equip Popular Perks" to pick the perks that result in the highest popularity rank (if you're not already using them).* You must be in orbit, a social space, or logged off.
Optative, however, at least has the excuse of always having been a Void precision Hand Cannon. Bungie rarely changes the element of a reprised energy weapon (Necrochasm being the biggest outlier due to needing to fit the Weapon of Sorrows kinetic archetype poison). Regardless, Optative has two main competitors in the Void 180 sphere - Word of Crota and the Ikelos_HC_V1.0.3. So lets compare. Stats are in the order of Optative/Word/Ikelos.
Range 34/31/32; Stability 55/57/55. Handling 26/36/33. Reload 53/57/33. Aim Assistance 67/78/75. Airborne 10/20/14. Zoom all share the same stat of 14. And Recoil 97/100/91. Overall, Optative has slightly better Range and is worst off in Handling, Aim Assist, and AE. Word of Crota, as a raid weapon, takes home the most wins with the best Stability, Handling, Aim Assist, AE, and Recoil, yet loses in Range. Ikelos sits middle of the road in all categories except its horrid base reload. Overall - not quite enough alone to make the decision for you, so lets look at what Optative has to offer perk-wise.
For PvE, Optative has Repulsor Brace, Demolitionist, Keep Away, Rapid Hit and Attrition Orbs in column 3, and Under-Over, Wellspring, Kill Clip, Deconstruct and Golden Tricorn in column 4. By comparison, Ikelos can pair Repulsor with reload perks, while Word can pair it with Destabilizing Rounds. Word also has a vastly superior suite of damage boosting perks (in fact all but Destabilizing are damage perks) but relies on Subsistence or Enlightened Action for reload perks. Ikelos also has Subsistence but can also use Rapid Hit and Stats for All, also has better damage perks, and access to Adaptive Munitions.
In short, if you want to take advantage of what makes Optative unique compared to its contemporaries, you either want to build into ability regen using its Demolitionist/Attrition Orbs + Wellspring combo, or just pair up its more unique perk combos to your liking.
HOWEVER... one area Optative arguably entirely outclasses its peers is in PvP. Not only is Nano-Munitions a solid PvP Trait, building an emergency reload when empty rather than auto-loading on Shield Break like Warminds Arsenal, but it has significantly more PvP applicable perks. Ikelos has absolutely terrible PvP offerings and Word isn't much better, with Killing Wind being the most obvious one. Optative, meanwhile, packs Hip Fire Grip, Keep Away, and Rapid Hit in Column 3, and Offhand Strike, Kill Clip, and Zen Moment in column 4. Precisions already have a solid hipfire, so if you wanted to become a hipfire god, Hip Fire Grip + Offhand Strike is for you. Otherwise, Zen Moment vs Kill Clip is a case of consistency vs Lethality. Kill Clip lowers your TTK, while Zen Moment reduces your recoil, grants flinch resistance, and caps out in just 3 shots on a Hand Cannon. Keep Away offers excellent buffs in PvP, and Rapid Hit is also solid.
All in all, Optative in PvE is ultimately going to depend on if you like what it has to offer versus its older Warmind and Hive brothers. But this Vex Machina entirely outdoes them in PvP viability, so if you like 180s in Crucible, this is for you.
I'm probably going to craft Optative with Attrition Orbs since that perk is usually a 4th column perk (at least on the weapons I've gotten it on so far). I have a Parbellum 900rpm solar SMG with rewind rounds + attrition orbs, and it creates 2 orbs per magazine (not including syphon mods), while scorching enemies on hit AND causing ignitions on precision kills (all due to the seasonal artifact) and I've been liking it MUCH more than Calus Mini Tool.
I wanna see what kind of shenanigans Attrition Orbs on Optative can do, so I'll be crafting it with that
