Something New

"It's new to me." —Banshee-44

"Do you ever tire of the work?" asks Eva Levante.

Banshee-44 looks up from his workbench. Eva often crosses in front of his kiosk on her walks to and from the Bazaar, striking up conversations with him in passing when she does. He briefly wonders if they've had this particular talk before; he wouldn't put it past her to simply let it play out to spare him the embarrassment of not remembering it.

"Can't say that I do," Banshee replies cordially. "Memory's not so great. Every gun feels like a new one."

Eva nods as she takes a sip of tea from the mug in her hand. "It's just that I see Guardians deliver parts to you all the time, and you seem to construct the same gun for them repeatedly. Are they not satisfied with what you provide?"

Banshee chuckles. "Maybe." He leans on the bench, looking at the various weapon components strewn about his shop. "It's a bit like Solstice, now that I think about it."

That seems to pique Eva's interest. "Oh?" she asks, eyebrow raised.

"Guardians bring me scraps, pieces of guns they dismantled." Banshee explains. "And I turn them into something new. Not always what the Guardian was hoping for, but they hold onto that hope and keep bringing me parts."

Eva smiles. "Same interaction, different outcome."

"Yeah. I guess you could say that."

"How wonderful," Eva says cheerfully. She raises his cup to him and walks back to the Courtyard.

"Definitely had that talk before," Banshee says to himself.

But he never tires of it.

Something Old? It is a few Solstice's old.
Something New? Precision Instrument and To The Pain are new.
Something Borrowed? Nadir Focus nicked off the other weaapons like it.
Something Blue? There is blue on it.

PvE: Rapid Hit, Subsistence, or Demolitionist + Explosive Payload, Headstone, Frenzy, or Wellspring. Take your pick.
PvP: Rapid Hit, Elemental Capacitor, or To The Pain + Explosive Payload, Precision Instrument, or Kill Clip. Pick your take.

Not quite a standout, but certainly a solid sort. Now go thank Banshee for making all the Solstice guns.

Nadir heard us guardians laughing at their Solstice hand cannon and brought it back with a vengeance. With improved stats, new perks, an additional origin trait, and enhanceability, Something New is ready to make a splash in 2024.

PvE: 120s are not the preferred archetype for most, but there are some solid perks. Demolitionist in column 3 can pair with Headstone for the first time on a hand cannon. Frenzy might be the better perk, though, since it will take care of your low reload and handling, while also boosting your damage. Explosive Payload is there too for a flat damage buff. Dream Work mitigates the small mag size a bit.

PvP is where this gets really interesting. Dare I say that this is the closest thing to a rival to Igneous Hammer we’ve yet seen (sorry, Crimil’s Dagger). It’s not quite on Iggy’s level but the right roll could make it the kinetic slot’s answer to the 120 king. I dropped what I’d call the 5/5 - Corkscrew/Accurized/Elemental Capacitor/Precision Instrument/Range MW. E-Cap with void for my fellow controller users gets you set on stability, and MnK users could try arc for handling, strand for AE or stasis for pseudo-Moving Target. To the Pain is also a perk to watch out for - cranking the aim assist on a 120 means you’re shooting cannon balls. Alternate C3 perks are Snapshot or Rapid Hit for those so inclined. As for C4, PI is #1 with a bullet, but Explosive Payload can be good too. Kill Clip no longer two taps everyone so I’d skip it. The cherry on top is the Nadir Focus origin trait, which pushes out your range and accuracy as you shoot.

All in all, a very solid reprisal for hand cannon fans.

This review isn't entirely accurate, as Bold Endings could already get Headstone + Demo, so this gun isn't first.

I really like the second origin trait (Nadir) on this gun. The first one is not half-bad either... team work does makes the dream work, after all. Not a big fan of Subsistence on some hand cannons, yet there is nice synergy here with Headstone -- not to scoff at Explosive Payload or Precision Instrument. These combos and similar ones need users to maximize their damage per SHOT most of the time... I guess it is better to save a primary with subsistence for clearing adds, but I hate doing that with HCs. They are also other very serviceable mentions in that column like Rapid Hit, which works well with the Nadir origin trait plus Precision Instrument, Kill Clip, or Frenzy (and to a lesser extent Vorpal or Explosive Payload).

PvP has lots of good options in columns 3 like RH/Snap/EC/To the Pain with nearly everything in column 4 (why is Wellspring there and not in column 3?). Speaking of which, Frenzy is a much better perk in pve for most players: if a player can live long enough in pvp combat to get frenzied... great. Again, the Nadir puts this in upper-tier selection for me. To the Pain is a nice addition to this iteration; I haven't had the chance to try it on anything before the ritual weapon this season (solar smg), and I liked it here as well. TTP pairs with the Nadir trait so that the user is always getting boosted in some way no matter what (receiving vs doing damage).

As for first two columns, I do not really care that much about those unless I get awful picks but hopefully players can get their pick here. Lots of choices for col 1 though. For PvP, prioritize range and/or stability; for PvE, handling and/or reload, but it kind of does not amount to a significant difference for pve.

The perk combos I've tried tried: TTP + EP (1), TTP + Vorpal, Snapshot + Vorpal, RH + Headstone (2), Subsistence w/ somethings. I've kept rolls (1) and (2). Strangely, they both have handling MW but that is not too bad on an 120 HC. The few Igneous Hammers I tried rolled with RH, and sold me on that perk -- I've also been fond of Precision Instrument on one of them, too. So I am transferring that likeness to this 120 HC.

I refrained from rating this 5/5 for either PvE or PvP bc I reserve perfect scores in either category for strictly my own all-time favs or longstanding communal bests of the best (and not just current meta bests). BTW, the plural of "solstice" appends "s" to the end, with no apostrophe.

Pve: it's a 120. Typically not good. But it has some interesting rolls

Pvp: great rolls, good stats, nadir gives range and accuracy and precision instrument gives more damage so it can 3 tap at pretty far ranges. As someone who never liked 120's, this actually feels really good

It should be pretty useful with Demolitionist and Headstone and that's the all around good roll for PvE.

Seems to be considerably rarer than the other Solstice weapons, so buckle in if you're after a nice Headstone variant. It's probably worth it, though- Dream Work keeps the lead coming.
