I've loved this gun probably more than any other weapon in the game. During Season of Dawn, I ground out an absurd amount of fractaline to get my perfect 2 rolls of Bygones... before they were sunset just 2 seasons later.

Now it's back, and my god, it's somehow better than before.

Taking my first drop into the field immediately and hearing that familiar BRRRT BRRRT was like greeting an old friend you've missed for so long. I have a roll with Subsistence/Kinetic Tremors (which, yes, KT procs Sub) but I'm looking forward to the crazy drops I'll be getting this season.
The superstar studded perk lists in each column? The crazy amount of viable combinations I can't even begin to list?
Not to mention, this is a core playlist/Gambit drop, so after a few resets you can have MULTIPLE perks in each column??

Personally, my go-to roll for versatility in everything will be Arrowhead Brake / Ricochet Rounds / Shoot to Loot / Kinetic Tremors / Range MW, but any roll you get is going to feel good.
Get good at Gambit. Go get this gun.

why tf did this get downvoted lmfao bygones is great, i'm just saying i had the old one that had full-auto was a personal god roll that fitted my playstyle, and i have like 3-5k pvp kills on it, but that perk has dose nothing for a very long time now cause there is a setting that turns it on, hence why the perk is dead, cause it legit dose nothing, and it no longer drops on guns anymore. unless it was my comments about steel feather being forgotten, witch it is. i mean ffs they brought everything back besides that auto when bring the saint wep's back.

but please tell me why full-auto isn't a dead perk, and that steel feather isn't in the shadow realm before just pressing dislike.

Bygones holds a special place in my heart. Back in the Gimmelshtump Dead Zone, in the days of my youth, I was a young and impressionable Titan who got the base game for free through the Forsaken-era offer. And with that time came the opportunity to try my hand at the Raggedy Rat-Mans Super Cool New Gamemode (TM). It was there I met the first weapon that really made me fall in love with this games gunplay... Bygones. Chambered Compensator, Light Mag, Under Pressure, Kill Clip. Hardly a PvE showstopper but I cared not, for she was beautiful to me! Alas, one day, the Sun Set upon our Vaults... and I had to leave her behind. But when the Final Shape loomed, I took her up once more! A glorious Final reprise for an old flame!

But now, the Drifter has thrown new fuel on the fire, and this flame is roaring hot with the passion of youth and meta perk pools! I'm a Bad Guy, she's a Bad Girl, and this is our Bad Romance!

...Sorry about that, this gun is probably my favourite in the entire game. It really does mean that much to me. So now its got viable, modern perks? We're back in business. Now, to said business. First to point out - in an Ideal World, you want Arrowhead Brake for your Barrel. That base 69 Recoil Direction is not great, and Arrowhead sets it to 99 - an inch off of perfect, an inch that realistically will never matter. Otherwise, pick from Chambered Compensator or Extended Barrel, depending on whether you prefer Stability, Range, and the size of your Handling nerf. Sure, you could stick a Counterbalance Mod on and call it a day, but speaking as someone who's used this gun for years - you can survive with just a weaker Recoil barrel, and your mod slot is better spent on one of the other mods, like the fancy new ones (especially if you're the sort to salivate over stats). As for your Magazine, ideally you want both a ranged perk and a mag/reload perk. Which specifically is down to personal preference, but I like Richochet Rounds for the stats and Flared Magwell for the Reload.

For PVP, you have Zen Moment, Keep Away, Lone Wolf, Under Pressure and To The Pain from Column 3, and Headseeker, High Ground, Kill Clip, Desperado, Closing Time and Eye of the Storm from Column 4. Good pairings include: Zen Moment/Keep Away+Headseeker (excellent neutral game combo for a Pulse); Under Pressure+Closing Time/Eye of the Storm (a pair of perks that enhance performance as your mag lowers - Eyes activation condition tends to align with a lower mag); and Perk of Choice+High Ground/Kill Clip/Desperado (the pure lethality options - Desperado is more forgiving than Kill Clip but harder to proc, and High Ground is a smaller boost that can be set off whenever you are high up).

For PVE, you have Keep Away, Outlaw, and Subsistence for Column 3 Reload perks, while Demolitionist, Shoot to Loot, and Attrition Orbs serve as Column 3 Neutral Game picks. From Column 4, everything aside from Osmosis is a lethality booster - Kinetic Tremors for easy AOE, Firefly for explosions and Reload, High Ground for an easy 25% buff, Desperado to go BRRR, Desperate Measures for ability synergy, Frenzy for damage and capped Handling and Reload, and Vorpal if you for some reason want to use this for Boss Damage. Of all of them, Kinetic Tremors and Firefly should be your picks for add clear, unless you would rather have a lethality option. Pair with your preference between a Reload or Neutral effect - note that Tremors/Firefly synergise with Shoot to Loot, any Reload perk is a bit superflous with Firefly since Enhanced it will always cap Reload speed, and Tremors will also proc Subsistence.

Personally, my target rolls will be Zen Moment or Under Pressure plus Headseeker for PvP, and Demolitionist or Subsistence plus Kinetic Tremors or Firefly for PvE. Preferably rolled into one gun - goodness knows I'm going to be grinding Gambit to another reset to get triple perk rolls if I can help it.

**THIS REVIEW IS AFTER THE 12.17.24 PATCH THAT NERFED HIGH GROUND**

PvE - Couple of good options here, I recommend Shoot to Loot and Kinetic Tremors OR Demo and Firefly, but with 12 perks per column there is a lot of mix and match here.

PvP - If you're looking for a new option to shift the TTK of Bygones to replace High Ground, consider Desperate Measures. 1 stack of DM is a 10% damage boost, enough to lower the TTK from 0.93 seconds (6C1B) to 0.60 seconds (6 crits aka 2 bursts). Obviously Kill Clip provides more forgiveness (5 crits T8 resil and lower, 4C2B T9 and T10), but you don't need to reload after a kill to get Desperate Measures going. Headseeker is still a great choice in Column 4, especially if you can get Radiant or an Empowering rift going to shift that TTK to a 2 burst. Desperado is okay, but I would only recommend it if you can keep something like Radiant up constantly, otherwise it's still a 3 burst kill. Column 3 offers a number of great options, including (in no particular order) Keep Away, Lone Wolf, Perpetual Motion, and Zen Moment. Most players will probably chase Zen Moment, but all of those perks offer really good benefits overall.

TL;DR - This weapon is still best in class, you might just have to play some more gambit to farm a new, better roll.

Never got to experience the original bygones, but if it was anything like this one oh boy was i missing out. Farmed out two rolls one for pve and one for pvp. Pve is what you'd expect, kinetic tremors and another perk of your choice really, in my case STL, i was pretty surprised at how well this thing performed against tougher enemies, easy to use, good perk options, feels really smooth. Now pvp i got fairly close to the personal god roll i wanted, Arrowhead,High cal, zen, desperado, from testing it seems arrowhead is fairly important here, but this thing is a monster, only restricted by it's archetype and even then, i only ever had problems against elsie users. it is an absolute laser beam with zen, basically unmovable, paired with desperado helps keep it extremely stable during that boosted fire-rate, good stat package and massive perk pool, should be a little of everything for everyone in there, well worth going through gambit to get.

I've been waiting for the return of this pulse rifle since I got my first god roll through a Gambit match, and a second through Ada during the Black Armory days. Quote all the stats you want, rant about how adaptives aren't the most competitive archetype for pulses, I don't care. This thing feels amazing to shoot, and thanks to its perk refresh it has a LOT of spicy combos to try. I got lucky and landed a Demo/Firefly roll for PvE along with a Perpetual Motion/EoTS roll for PvP, and both of them SLAP. While I'm a little sad my favourite roll of Rangefinder/Outlaw is no longer possible, I'm excited to get a roll with Headseeker, or Outlaw/Desperado. There was a Bygones shaped hole in my soul that has been filled, and more.

Off to do a pile of resets in gambit to get multi perks on the drops to get a god roll or two. I used my old one everywhere I could that sunset gear was viable. It got a lot of use with The Final Shape and Echos when sunsetting ended. I remember grinding forges for years to get my god roll, yes its gambit but Ada-1 handed out Augmented drops with extra perks in some cols which was very rare back then.

My PvE roll is Demo+Firefly, and my PvP roll is Outlaw+Kill clip. Unfortunately, it doesn't get Headseeker+Kill clip anymore. In PvE its an "whatever" gun. I'd probably use something like blast furnace instead. In PvP, it's a completely deferent story. It could get a lot of good combos like Outlaw+Kill clip, Outlaw+headseeker, Zen moment+headseeker, etc.

My body desires a Subsistence/Firefly combo so bad. Rocking an Outlaw/KTremor roll and boy howdy does this thing feel as good as when it left.

I hate burst fires, but I needed a goto pusle for pathfinder. I fell in love with attrition orb kinetic tremor on an smg so I rolled for those on my bygones. 3 Drifter resets later and I dont love the other rolls on the gun so ill probably go for another one, but it feels great to shoot. Now the dream is to get one with a whole other god roll, with AO+KT, with the multi perk drops.

I think people like this weapon for its feel and sound and scope. It was a beloved gun back in the day. Sort of like how night's watch is still the best feeling scout imo.

Bygones definitely doesn't compete at the same level as most pulse rifles these days. You probably got down voted for recommending Chattering Bone when Blast Furnace can roll with Kinetic Tremors and One For All.
