TIP: New Season & Popularity Ranks

It's a new season! Popularity ranks can change rapidly at the start of a new season, especially on new weapons.

Be careful jumping to conclusions for a week or so as the meta starts to shake out.

TIP: Popularity Ranks

The letters F thru S below are Popularity Ranks. They measure how popular your roll is versus the most popular roll for this weapon among the global community. The most popular roll is ranked S+. The least popular is ranked F-. Popular doesn't necessarily mean "good"; unpopular doesn't necessarily mean "bad". Use what you enjoy!

New refresh with heal clip.... But you won't use it much in the intended role for ad slayer.
Basically mow down crowds with Incandescent. That's it.

Reload perks are only 3 (and in my personal ranking).
Rewind rounds (arguably the best, works on hits), Auto loading holster (convenient, keep it away once you done murking ads) subsistence (on kills, but very usable as an ad slayer).

Now Dragonfly with Incandescent is interesting, allowing you to double dip in explosions.
But personally I prefer ease of reloading or option to keep firing, so you may find value.

In PVP, it is an MG and there are better MGs out there...
Or why not use a rocket?

"You know what time it is, Red?"
"Avalanche Time, Baby!!" *high-five*

First, PvP! ...uh, there's better. Sure, you have Dynamic Sway and new perk Closing Time, but its a heavy machine gun - neither of those are going to be much of a factor. It does have Vorpal though, which is nice for dumpstering supers. So Closing Time + Vorpal, if anything. Hey, its better than what some MGs get.

Second, PvE! ...Don't lie, you're here for Incandescent. This is still the only Adaptive MG that can roll it (other than the Trials-gated Unwavering Duty) and the Incandescent Solar MG with the best Column 3 options. Heal Clip is a bait, highly inefficient on an MG. Pick from Subsistence for constant reloads based on kills, Rewind Rounds for constant reloads based on hits, or Dragonfly for even more explosions. Subsistence is probably better given what you're using this for, but up to you. Column 4 has some dps picks otherwise, but you probably want a different MG for that. You could make it work, but Incandescent is too good to ignore (and the dps wouldn't be great anyway).

Overall, Avalanche is still a really good gun. Don't f*ck up, and get one now!

Remember what made Tyranny of Heaven so neat? It was the fact that a single shot into a crowd could cause an ignition, because kills from Dragonfly explosions also proc Incandescent bursts. Avalanche can now do that too.

Machine guns suffer from a terribly long reload time, which is why Subsistence, Auto-loading Holster, Rewind Rounds, and Reconstruction are so good on them; it's also why Heal Clip is so bad on it. Heal Clip is a fantastic perk, but not on a machine gun - don't fall for that bait.

If Bungie granted more stacks of Cure for Heal Clip on weapons with inherently slower reloads, even then that perk wouldn't be viable for it. Heal Clip was the wrong call for a perk refresh here, unless they purposefully put it in to give us a clear-cut sign of what to dismantle.

Last year I farmed this weapon too much and had too many options to go through, and it wasn't as if I was wanting for functional solar LMGs tbw. I have/had multiple Unwavering Duties and a good solar Archon's that has been a staple for my pvp loadout for the better part of two years, probably. I still possess pure ADD-clearing and DPS/add-clearing hybrid rolls from last year: both had a [reload]+Incandescent; both had Under-Over; one had AJ, the other Cascade Point. I guess I could replace one of those rolls with a proper Target Lock / Cascade Point multi-perk option in the fourth column for pure DPS, or a Dragonfly + Incandescent roll to replace one of the old Incandescent ones.

The "new" perks in the fourth column are good replacements: Golden Tricorn, Firing Line or Collective Action. GT is versatile, working for both add clearing and boss DPS, is the best raw damage for DPS in the game, but requires add-clearing and grenade/melee kills for full-stack activation. Firing Line is the easiest damage perk to use in the whole game, and is probably better for DPS than add-clear (I've often been in fireteams where everyone scatters during mob phases). CA is potentially very easy to activate and keep up, especially this season, but its damage caps out to 20% and that is short of current favourites like BnS (of which this weapon doesn't have anyway); it's definitely suited for clearing adds.

Save for Incandescent, the returning perks in the fourth column are DPS staples and pair well with the returning perks in the third, including a DSR + Target combo. Heal Clip is new and would go with Incandescent like bread & butter, but why would anyone want to constantly reload with an LMG? Despite that, overall, Avalanche's PvE ubiquity & versatility is more or less improved over last year's, but there are still equal-or-better LMG options for PvE out there... some of which are arguably easier to farm (anything that is subject to annual FOMO is automatically a PITA).

I don't recall last year's performance in pvp, and lately I haven't used any LMG in the crucible except the regular BRAVE & shiny versions of Hammerhead, as well as the new stasis Archon's Thunder. I have two awesome stasis rolls, one of which also works for pve, as well as that older solar version. Until Bungie re-examines the wheel here, there's no need for me to use any other legendary LMG. Closing Time on this latest Avalanche seems promising, especially with Target Lock, but I doubt it's a deal breaker, and DSR would work well for TL too -- I believe the latter combo was available in last year's Avalanche, anyway.

TLDR - Prioritize Stay Frosty, Glaciocasm and the new Mistral LFR. You can ignore Albedo Wing, unless you didn't get a Grave Robber + Close to Melee roll from last year. It's too bad Cold Front didn't get a reprise (note that a "reprisal" is subtly different in meaning than a "reprise.")

Personally I'd choose Spelologist over this. And it's craftable.
