TIP: New Season & Popularity Ranks

It's a new season! Popularity ranks can change rapidly at the start of a new season, especially on new weapons.

Be careful jumping to conclusions for a week or so as the meta starts to shake out.

TIP: Popularity Ranks

The letters F thru S below are Popularity Ranks. They measure how popular your roll is versus the most popular roll for this weapon among the global community. The most popular roll is ranked S+. The least popular is ranked F-. Popular doesn't necessarily mean "good"; unpopular doesn't necessarily mean "bad". Use what you enjoy!

Lucked out and got a subsistence/killing tally role where as my adept version rolled with not so desirable perks. Subsistence and Killing Tally pair together like PB&J and make for a fantastic combination when paired with a Warlocks Cenotaph helmet. With that being said, it is a trace rifle, and while Killing Tally greatly helps with the lack of damage that trace rifles are known for, there are still better options for special weapons.

If you still run double special, this is a great special in terms of ammo economy.

Just got the incredible roll of:
-arrowhead brake (so the gun actually feels like a laser beam shooter and not a green flamethrower)
-tactical battery (just for the minor stat balance)
-slice (for high mobility hunter strand things)
And -hatchling (for that sweet sweet strand ability spam)
This is a staple in most of my strand hunter builds as double special is actually still a thing and with forbearance and the solstice strand rocket with envious assassin, this gun slaps in most loadouts. Couldnt ask for a better strand trace rifle for d2. Except maybe if it had stl? I don't know maybe I'm just nit picking a little. Solid gun, solid perks, thats all there is to it.

Really fun with the right perks.
I prefer Attrition Orb, Slice for my PVE Strand Titan build, with the Propagation and Rebirth threads to have full strand effects on uptime with all the orbs I'd want to charge my super before a damage rotation - which in at least low-tier gameplay leads to a damn good amount of explosions, and survivability to work with the Banner Debuffs. It can get pretty insane damage I didn't expect with target lock and the right perks, like if you run double strand surge. I have to say this is a weapon to farm for in the arguably worst game mode of the game, sorry.

The fact that I can proc sever on minibosses makes it my new go-to kinetic strand weapon for builds. Plus, with the organic adornment shader - it looks like a giant thing of sour apple candy. And who doesn't love sour apple?

For PVP I've grabbed a Sever - Target Lock thing for hunter and... yeah its a thing alright. It's a trace rifle in PVP - what did you expect; low damage and low ammo. Does good damage but you're going to get out TTK'd fast. Maybe in 6v6 for funsies? But never actually used.

EDIT: I have heard through the grapevine Attrition Orbs don't proc off damage, and instead works by checking if 70% of the magazine was used in a period of time- or something along those lines. I've since swapped from Attrition to the Target Lock from before and it's generally much easier, and a good tool against yellow bar enemies instead. Target Lock, Sever is a good catch-all in PVE & PVP.

TLDR: PVE Fun green sillystring.

attrition orb requires 69 bullets to hit before it makes one orb making it not worth it jitters and has too low stability to work with tl

Attrition orb isn't very good on a trace rifle unfortunately. Too much ammo to use just to generate a single orb. Meanwhile my Rewind Rounds Attrition Orbs Parabellum smg (solar 900rpm) can generate a guaranteed orb every mag (sometimes it generates 2 when shooting a tough target and you land every bullet).
Not only does this SMG proc attrition orbs faster than a trace, it also has infinite ammo

Target lock doesn’t feel like it does all that much in pvp, and killing gally and kill clip are annoying since it’s a special weapon, and the ammo economy is tough, imo a perk like tap the trigger or another one that makes is easier to land shots is better with slice

Getting underrated because of the new stasis trace rifle. This thing is an all around solid weapon with decent enough perks. But Appentence does have it beat in more ways than one. Strand is notably a better damage type than stasis in most scenarios, and this has perks that synergize with the strand subclass, so for a specific style of strand build this weapon has a place. Not really a chase for most players, but if you already play trials its a solid choice for the strand players of the world.

This is a PvP focused Trace rifle.

In PvE Sub + Killing Tally or Slice + Killing Tally, Target Lock, hatchling or kill clip. Are probably the combos. Unfortunately the Appentice from the same season is in the same slot and has a much better PvE perk set.

In PvP, this will always be limited by how good traces are. Traces kill very fast at good ranges, but require a lot of aim and they have limited ammo.
I’d expect Dynamic Sway, Zen Moment or Slice + Kill Clip or Tap the Trigger to be the go to.
