It has been a long time since we've heard the iconic *ping* of Spare Rations firing, and regardless of its PVP pedigree, this weapon serves to remind us just how much the game has changed. Despite receiving a minor stat buff to bring it in line with it's native 140 adaptive contemporaries, the 150 lightweight holdovers like higher handling, aim assist, and recoil direction are not enough to make this weapon competitive in the current HC ecosystem. To be blunt, the only reason Rose, another faux 140, is even remotely competitive is due to its ability to get grips and its stacked perk pool. Sadly, Spare Rations is both lacking in stats and great fourth column perks.

That isn't to say spare is garbage or doodoo water. It isn't. But when held against the juggernauts that dominate the kinetic slot, it looks lacking. It undoubtedly is. Further, the fact that the weapon cannot be crafted further starves its anemic stat distribution, and makes the experience for players obtaining their desired roll just that much more difficult. While there may be some potential in PVE, it then has to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Timelost Fatebringer, which is yet again, another losing battle.

Spare Rations long had the reputation of being a deceptive beast. Even during its hayday, its stats were nothing remarkable. Yet it's access to meta perks like rangefinder along with some "under the hood" magic, made the gun feel superb. It being a 150 and receiving the lightweight bonus in addition to its .8 ttk made it a worthy pick for any HC fanatic. Now, 150s no longer exist, and the lightweight bonus is relegated to a weapon that is, as of season 21, unobtainable. The game has simply moved past Spare Rations and Bungie has done nothing to help the weapon catch up to its competition. However, what will really solidify this weapon's place in the game is the looming zoom changes and range retooling. Rangefinder will no longer boost range, which will likely place more emphasis on the range stat. If this is the case, then kiss any chance of this weapon being great goodbye. It is a darn shame such an iconic weapon is returning with little gas in its proverbial tank, but after we received Mindbenders Ambition a few seasons ago, should we be surprised?

It may not be the broken OP shooting below the belt and still getting headshots at 40 meters anymore, but it's still a damn good handcanon. Is it the best anymore? Heavens no. That said, it's still a FUN handcanon to play with, will you go flawless with just this in Trials? Probably not, but for bounties/Control/Iron Banner? It'll do just fine. I've got Hammer forged, Ricochet, Snapshot, and Kill clip. Is it a godroll? No, not at all, but it's still an A. And it's finally good to use it again, and if you want something that's FUN and familiar that is still decent enough for more casual modes? Pick one up if you can. (Recomend getting the weapon focusing challenge done, then grind Deep Dive for engrams to farm it most reliably)

In pve the biggest thing this gun has going for it is currently being the only handcannon with kinetic tremors. The obvious pairing perk for it in the 3rd column is rapid hit but don't ignore Subsistence for content where you can be getting lots of kills with the aoe.

For pvp Spare Rations won't be the top of the meta but it is far from a bad choice. 3rd column has some depth with rapid hit, slideshot, moving target, and snapshot sights all being solid options. Perks options in the 4th column are a bit slimmer but kill clip and opening shot are both good for different things.

The thing I like the least about these returning weapons is how the community treats them. If a former pvp meta king comes back and doesn't immediately take its place among the top weapons then a very vocal section of the community acts like bungie intentionally came into their house and killed their favorite son.

Oh, Spare Rations. This serves as the latest example of the former 150s struggling as a 140. I can’t deny the gun feels VERY good and feels super snappy. But it STRUGGLES compared to its younger brothers in Austringer, Eyasluna, and so on.
Part of that is probably due to Rangefinder and how much it helps those other two hand cannons. Spare Rations HAD it, but it’s absent here. I get the mentality, don’t want to crowd up kinetic 140s with Rangefinder, but it still hurts the weapon…. Right now. Bungie is looking to decouple range from zoom and give Rangefinder a rework overall, so there’s a good chance this’ll get better as time goes on. For now though, this will struggle.
If you’re going for a roll, I’d look for your range-boosting perks in Slideshot & Opening Shot. +45 range to open up an engagement is no laughing matter.

…Oh right, PvE is a thing. Special attention goes to Kinetic Tremors, especially with hand cannons in the artifact this season. Rapid Hit/Kinetic Tremors will put in work for you here.

In PvE its decent enough to consider in master content with unstop champs, rapid hit/subsistance and kinetic tremors is my god roll. In PvP its as good as you can get without payload perks, i have a snapshot sights kill clip roll that is top tier for dueling, overall its a shame it didnt get any payload perks but its still amazing

Spare Rations, at its ceiling, is a monster of a handcannon. With Slideshot + OS, you can initiate with 100 range and 100 aim assist, with a strong base stat line in QoL stats such as Stability/Handling. However, this requires a 5/5 (which is imo Smallbore Ricochet SS OS Range MW), and after that first shot you are brought to a very noncompetitive 58 range. As of right now, this weapon is severely outperformed by Rose in most cases, with RF in particular pushing it out of relevance. However, with the upcoming RF changes we could see Spare Rations making a place for itself as a raw dueling, comfort weapon, due to its iconic feel and above average statspread aside from range. At the very least, it does not deserve as much hate as it is being given.

For PVE, Spare Rations struggles due to it being a handcannon, but comparatively to its archetype it is quite good, especially with Kinetic Tremors and Rapid Hit.

It has some solid perks and damage in PvE and even if it doesn't hit god tier it still does a pretty good job. It however falls flat in PvP due to lower stability and handling, which makes the gun feel underwhelming when comparing to other more viable choices.

In season 21 this hadncannon with kinetic tremors and rapid hit is a win for simple content and seasonal activities however being a 140 these days does hurt it. This handcannon overall feels amazing to use snappy, quick reload (with rapid hit) and decent range. My hope is with season 22 (post handcannon buff) we will see a revival of this as a fun to use legendary in harder content although it may never be a pure win over others being in the kinetic slot may give it an edge currently being the only kinetic tremors option for HC's.

Literally farmed this thing. Can't say I was let down. Satisfying noise, satisfying appearance, overall satisfying performance. I recommend Slideshot + Opening Shot with Ricochet Rounds and Full Bore for that max range output, or trade Full Bore for Hammer Forged to keep some stability. Great weapon, just not top tier in the current pvp sandbox, sadly.

As of season 22 I think this gun has deserved too much scrutiny from the community, even before the RF nerfs.

For PvE, this is probably tied with Timelost Fatebringer for the best kinetic hand cannon in the game. Rapid hit and Kinetic tremors work wonderfully on this weapon, and Kinetic tremors is an amazing perk to have on any primary weapon. I think Fatebringer may edge it out a little bit, but farming a Timelost Fatebringer is a little bit easier than getting one of these, even so I think it's very close. Interchangeable if I'm being honest, 5/5.

PvP I find to be a mixed bag. I think people dunked on this weapon because if you don't have the best possible range on a hand cannon, people tend to tear the weapon down since hand cannons are underperforming when compared to the current top picks like SMGs, pulses and Sidearms. This gun has some of the best handling and stability that you can get on a kinetic HC and compared to the current top kinetic HC's it only loses to them on about 10-12 range(for TL fatebringer however, its 20). This is about 2 meters of range (20 range is about 4m) which is actually not that bad. What kills this weapon when compared to top hand cannons is the lack of explosive payload(and before rangefinder, but RF is nerfed now so not as bad). Opening shot is a promising perk but Explosive Payload is always active and a bit more consistent as a result. 4/5 if compared to 140 HC's in pvp, 3.5 if we are involving meta. Solid gun in both modes, would definitely not miss this.

The first and only one I've gotten so far was corkscrew, rapid hit, kinetic tremors. The magazine perks I got suck, w/ appended or alloy, but overall, pretty lucky.

This thing is underrated with slideshot active it will 3 tap at 40meters!? For pve it got potential because of kinetic tremors

An old hand cannon with some classic rolls. Unfortunately, this thing's classic in a pretty bad way. Its base stats are low for a kinetic hand cannon, and its perks aren't unique compared to its contemporaries. It also shares its slot with Austringer, another Kinetic Adaptive hand cannon that's craftable to boot. Farm it if you want, but there's so many other kinetic hand cannons that absolutely humiliate Spare Rations.

I'll admit that the origin trait is nice though. Flinch resistance and range for picking up an ammo brick can really help you get some picks.

Not as good as it used to be, but still feels incredible. a slight range buff would be nice, but until then, I'll keep using this bad baby till they go and sunset it again. Mid in PvE only because HCS suck in PvE sandbox rn.

I got the coveted hammer forged ricochet range slideshot + opening shot roll… From fishing. It struggles against any hand cannon with rangefinder this season but I know a lot of you old boiz ended up grinding for Not Forgotten and ended up using Waking Vigil instead. New spare feels better than old vigil ever did and you can use it with cloudstrike and duality. Rose outclasses this thing slightly but you trade opening shot for explosive, otherwise yin and yang.

PVE:
There are far better HC's in PVE, Posterity which has voltshot, Malfeasance with the catalyst, Kings Fall HC with Incandescent + Explosive Payload. This does have kinetic tremors but just like Buzzard it takes far too much of the mag to proc. Vorpal + Rapid hit if you really want to use it against champs.

PVP:
It feels GREAT, the sound, the reload animation, mm chefs kiss.HOWEVER, the range on this is rather mid. I have a max range slide shot + opening shot roll and its serviceable. For the time being, it will lack to any HC with Rangefinder, and until we see how bad the nerf is, it will lack. I do however enjoy this in 6's or even comp bc it forces me to play much more aggressively than I'm used to. I would definitely grab one to test out once Rangefinder gets nerfed but until then this is definitely a fun gun, not an OP trials stomping gun. Slide + Opening feels good, Kill Clip is ok on 140's now, added forgiveness but doesn't lower TTK, If you want to lean into the close range HC rapid hit might be fun. Moving + Opening might be fun but the aim assist and hitting crits is so easy the only real benefit is strafe speed.

I kinda missed this gun tbh, but Former 150 RPMs will never be what guns like Austringer are now. I'll be honest, I pulled and pulled and pulled for this gun before I realized that getting that extra 20 range on a perfect 5/5 roll wouldn't save the current slideshot and opening shot roll I have now. Sure, it can feel nice to some people, but there are just so many better options for PvP. If you like it, cool. Just know and accept that there are better options, if you don't like it, who can blame you? Almost everything about this gun is lacking in the current state of the game. For PvE, use a Fatebringer or a Zaouli's or Sunshot or something. They're just flat out better. Kinetic Tremors is cool and all, but it can roll on guns like Hung Jury and Battle Scar, which I feel like the perk is more suited for those types of longer-range weapons. Bungie, just let your sunsetted weapons rest. And if you aren't, they'd better be JUICED. Spare Rations just isn't, unfortunately.

oh spare rations, what have they done to you? 36 range? no range boosting perks outside of opening shot and slideshot? oh the horror. not terrible but not rlly worth using in pvp and pve. there are simply far better options.

not really, when full bore, ricochet rounds, slideshot and opening shot with range mw can only give you 35 meters on the first shot after sliding, but drops down to 31.1 meter right after shooting that first shot. I am aware of rangefinder nerf is coming, but spare rations cannot compete against a single hand cannon with rangefinder atm
