Traveler's Chosen

"All we have left now is our faith."

I push into my ossific den and he is there.

I see him looking over the side, toward his Traveler, head bent. He is speaking softly, but I can hear him. Anyone who was listening could.

He waits for a response and I do as well, tense, curious. He stands attentively, this loyal dog of a man. It is no time at all for me, but for him, the hours creep by in silence.

I am ready to choke the voice of his Traveler if it answers him, but there is nothing. He tightens his grip on the railing.

I feel something shift inside him and a new possibility presents itself.

**

Again, I press against the sockets. The net creaks softly with my eagerness.

Someone approaches and he turns his back to his Traveler. There is an exchange, obscured by the rubicund thrash.

He is given reports. Hope bleeds from him. He gives the messenger a token of his faith. They accept it without understanding its meaning.

He watches as they leave. There is a hollow place in his center. It is beautiful.

**

I return warily.

I do not see him, but I hear him. He speaks to all with a voice thick with grief.

I must learn how far I have been set back. I reach to him tentatively. Strength. I push—and feel only sweet, soft rot.

I am delirious with pleasure. It gave them no answers; it was a reflex, the spasm of dumb muscle.

A song of joy rises within me.

Now.

[EDIT UPDATE Season 23: I think there was a silent nerf no one really noticed. Each Gathering Light stack no longer consistently gives 10% ability energy. It varies by ability. With 10 stacks of GL, you can get between 60% to 100% of your ability back, and it seems to vary across all melee, grenade, and class abilities. This may have been put in place because of Prismatic subclass. Traveler's chosen is still super good as per my review below, but just not as OP as it was before!]

Not much is being mentioned about Traveler's Chosen (or it’s catalyst) for Season 20 (Season of Defiance, Strand, and New Mod system) so I'll provide an update based on my testing, in both PvE and PvP.

Traveler's Chosen is absolutely S-tier when it comes to ability refreshing, no doubt about that. Each stack of Gathering Light (GL) gives 10% of your energy back for every ability simultaneously. It’s basically Wellspring on crack. For abilities with 2 or more charges, GL can overcharge an ability (ie. If you have 50% grenade energy and consume 10 stacks of GL, then you have 150% grenade energy - aka 1 and a half charges). For example, this is great for Warlock Strand Melee as you get 3 charges but the cooldown is long. Traveler’s Chosen can bypass that and force your ability regeneration (and their charges) very quickly.
The ability spam is more prominent in PvE, but also good in PvP. Note a guardian kill gives you 3 stacks of GL, not just 1. You can keep these stacks for the boost in handling/reload/target acquisition, or immediately eat them for 30% of all your abilities back. That’s pretty dang good, either way. People have already mentioned the low TTK values of Traveler’s Chosen, and they only get better when you stack up GL as the gun snowballs as you mow down people in the crucible.

But what people forget, or look over, are the new catalyst perks! They make the gun absolutely bonkers. A complete catalyst now adds both Surplus and Osmosis, which I will outline below:

SURPLUS: The handling/reload/stability from surplus makes the gun feel super fast and super crispy. On top of that, if you have 10 stacks of GL, the gun feels like Sonic the Hedgehog, because it’s just that fast. Surplus also helps the gun maintain that crispiness once you’ve consumed your GL stacks. The [handling/reload/target acquisition] you lose from consuming the GL stacks, you gain back from Surplus [handling/reload/stability]. These perks are more noticeable in PvP, as they give you that slight advantage to help you win your duels.

OSMOSIS: Frankly, is a slept on perk and the synergy of it with your subclass is hilarious. When you throw your grenade, the gun takes on the energy type of your equipped subclass. This has 4 major interactions worth noting: 1)Orb creation, 2)Weapon Damage Mods, 3)Volatile rounds, and 4)Unravelling rounds. Osmosis allows Traveler’s Chosen to take on all of the above.
With orb creation, if you put on a siphon mod matching your subclass, it’s orbs for days. You don’t have to worry about the expensive kinetic siphon mod (3 energy), but instead can slap on the harmonic siphon mod (1 energy) and boom, orbs everywhere!
With Leg mods of increasing weapon damage types, it does stack onto Traveler’s Chosen. Remember, this is alongside it’s red-bar enemy damage buff of 40% from 2022 (all primary exotics got this buff). Therefore, the gun shreds red-bars, even on legendary and master content. But now if you add on the 10%/17%/22% damage for 1/2/3 weapon damage mods, respectively, this tiny pistol will make you gag, because it’s so sick.
Lastly, for Volatile and Unravelling rounds, people forget that Osmosis allows your gun to do this. It makes the add clear of Traveler’s Chosen crazy. It's also worth noting that Volatile/Unravel rounds have intrinsic anti-barrier against champions, or any enemy with a shield. Holy moley, as if this gun needed anti-champion and shield piercing capabilities, but ok, we'll take it.

Overall, Traveler’s Chosen should be a part of everyone’s arsenal because it gives you ability energy, hits like a truck, gets bonuses to it’s own stats, AND can be any energy type. It circumvents the need to find a weapon of each energy type to match your build. You just bring Traveler’s chosen, because it can quite literally do it all by itself.

I don't think I could have said it any better than how you did. This review in of itself is exotic in quality, just like Traveler's Chosen is.

Small little detail, and I'm sorry if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure they lowered the gathering light stacks to two per kill instead of three.

Hey so about the edit you made about the amount of energy you get back? So they did a change on ability generating perks like Demolitionist where it's no longer a flat % but instead scales based on how much energy you have. So if you're missing 100% then it should give back the 10% from Demolitionist (I forgot what Gathering Light gives to use in the example) but if you're only missing 50% then it'll only give back...7% something like that.

I figured it was only on those perks but with your edit I'm guessing it was applied to all ability generation.

I did not know this, thanks for the input! When I did my testing I would use all my abilities so they would all be at 0%. The ability regeneration seemed consistent but varied if I had different melee, class, or grenade abilities. Perhaps there is some hidden interaction with what you mentioned and how Bungie rebalanced Gathering Light. Regardless, Traveler's Chosen still slaps and I love it haha

this weapon is so good for PvE. with how many trash mob there is in the average activity it isn't hard to get x10 (which is harder in pvp cause you loose stacks when you die) and at x10 you get full abilities from the special reload (which looks sick) and is honestly a great exotic to end year 3.

With the advent of Void 3.0, paired with the fragment that allows Void grenades to weaken enemies, this might be one of my new favorite Exotic primaries.

Looks like it’ll be a beast in PvE and PvP. Now that Champion mods can be equipped on armor and then affects all weapons of that type, this could make this gun meta in some cases. Being able to choose an increase to stats or getting ability energy back is incredible. In PvP this will be very, very popular when it releases. Pair this with Chromatic Fire on Warlock for PvE and get yourself a Jack-of-all-trades beast.

Good weapon with great perks, swapping FATS for Surplus actually made sense, unlike giving Feeding Frenzy to a gun that is meant to infinitely chain precision hits for infinite ammo and giving Ensemble to the gun about having your teammates die.
