TIP: New Season & Popularity Ranks

It's a new season! Popularity ranks can change rapidly at the start of a new season, especially on new weapons.

Be careful jumping to conclusions for a week or so as the meta starts to shake out.

TIP: Popularity Ranks

The letters F thru S below are Popularity Ranks. They measure how popular your roll is versus the most popular roll for this weapon among the global community. The most popular roll is ranked S+. The least popular is ranked F-. Popular doesn't necessarily mean "good"; unpopular doesn't necessarily mean "bad". Use what you enjoy!

It has good rolls but in terms of pve, it's a thoroughly nerf-massacred class of weapon that would've been power crept anyway by the current likes of Gjallarhorn setups and Sleeper buffs. Extremely noteworthy, however, is the demolitionist + wellspring roll for PvP use, making it easily the best PvP grenade launcher. If GLs ever get buffed though, this thing has the potential to be a real monster.

I don’t understand people downvoting this review. Taking an objective look this gun is held back by its class, there is simply nothing to recommend using a heavy GL in PVE.

Explosive light caps out at 6 stacks so for sustained boss DPS this is never going to beat better options like linear fusions or rockets. At best you get max one clip of increased damage, assuming you are able to get 6 orbs of light, then it reverts to its normal damage, and heavy GLs are held back by their limited ammo reserves.

In terms of being used for ad clear there’s really no difference in terms of whether it has a damage perk or not. Red bars will be killed by one shot whether it has one for all, adrenaline junkie, or frenzy procced or not. Yellow bars will always take several shots. There is no reason to dedicate a heavy weapon to burst ad clear when there are options like osteo striga and chain reaction wave frame GLs which do a better job in the primary and special slots.

The other column mainly has perks which boost the reload stat which is for the most part pointless on a heavy GL since they naturally reload fairly fast. Unrelenting might have been an interesting option before except now literally every void class has devour available to it.

The impulse amplifier perk option does give some utility for PVP usage if people want to use an exotic in other other slots.

But for PVE this is a non-starter. How many day one Vow of the Disciple teams said “you know what we should run? Typhon GL5!”.

Impulse Amplifier AND Explosive Light?! 😍

If you've never used a heavy GL with Impulse Amplifier, you need to do yourself a favor and farm for one. Once you've experienced it, it's hard to appreciate other GL's without it. The massive increase to projectile velocity takes the guess work out of calculating your angle of trajectory, basically allowing you to aim directly at - and hit your targets like a discount version of Micro Missile on Mountaintop. Pair that with the increased damage and blast radius of Explosive Light and you'll be deleting groups of enemies like you're using a rocket launcher. I only wish it could drop with Full Court for single-target DPS.

Good lord, this is the first weapon I got in which queen, and I never thought I'd see the day, but guys, this Demo + Wellspring combo is absolutely busted. even when I'm not using devour, its not uncommon for me to lob a nade at a couple ads, only to instantly get my grenade back. I haven't given this thing up since. A single kill can score up to 50% energy. imagine that w/ devour. Recharging an entire grenade w/ one kill might actually be possible guys. highly recommend testing it out and having some fun w/ this weapon!

I also have a Demolitionist + Wellspring combo that I got while doing the legendary campaign. I was already working on several ability builds at the time, but this thing is nasty. A good shot will refund so much energy.

My Typhon has the perks Volatile + Quick Launch, High Explosive Ordinance + Mini frags, Demolitionist and Wellspring with a stability Masterwork. My only gripe is that it is not a projectile launch masterwork, and maybe not having High Velocity Rounds. Nonetheless, it is a NASTY ability recharger. One shot really can refund up to 50% energy. It is kind of scary...

Chill Clip and Omolon Fluid Dynamics have great synergy. Spike and Steady Hands are nice. Cap it off with a Reload masterwork to keep that top half of the magazine going.

This is oddly specifically good with fusion nades witherhorde warlock. Using demolitionist to reload every few shots allows for constant chill clip and no downtime between dealing damage. Slap on a boss spec and dish out some of the foulest DPS in the game. On the other hand the ammo economy is shit so that godly DPS is here for a good time not a long time. (For reference this solo three phases persys with full heavy every phase)

Bungie is giving a buff season 20, maybe with the right rolls (Spike, demo and Explosive Light) we might have a new temporary meta right here. If u have it keep it for ever.

Personally demo explosive spike nade quick launch absolute shreds, no to chill clip cus bump in the night plus gally does it better and for boss deeps the 44 percent buff from explosive plus the 25 from font and then the 7 from boss spec THEN well and tether all add up to 131.77. Plus Gl's got buffed by 10 percent i believe (not sure) but def either pick up now or miss out for the next gl damage increase.

Gonna go out on a limb here and say that spike + demo + explosive light and whatever the new equivalent of font of might is with the new +20% GL buff, this will be far and away the biggest burst dps weapon in the game.

Get one and hold on to it if you find one.

100% the new top tier grenade launcher for PVE, this is basically the best you can get. demo, impulse amplifier, explosive light, frenzy, unrelenting.. this thing has huge potential in PVE in almost any roll. for PVP though i'd say it's fairly unremarkable like a lot of GLs are. do try and get spike grenades though, a flat 12% or so damage boost is hard to underrate

If you can get one with prox grenades and impulse amplifier its incredibly fun to use. Point and shoot with little chance you don't get a OHK. I don't think there is another farmable GL with impulse amplifier at the moment.

For my review: top tier heavy GL, look for Demo + anything. Found a weird discrepancy between how Chill clip and Omolon fluid dynamics work, they both say "top-half of the magazine" in the tooltip but seem to act slightly differently. For example, Chill clip with 8 in the mag you get 5 Chill clip rounds. So for Chill clip: 8mag/5chill 7mag/4chill, 6mag/4chill, 5mag/3chill. Omolon fluid dynamics: 8mag/4chill, 7mag/4chill, 6mag/3chill, 5mag/3chill.
